YouTube plans to make it even easier to produce Shorts by adding a new feature that will automatically trim the most appealing sections of longer-form videos into shorter chunks.

The platform is experimenting with a tool that allows producers to take engaging chunks from long-form videos and broadcast them as independent 16:9 videos.

If you are a content creator participating in the experiment, you will see the 'Create a video highlight' option in YouTube Studio Desktop's video editing tool."

So, essentially, the tool will be able to generate Shorts for you based on the features that drive the highest engagement and view time in your longer videos.

This approach might make it more easy for more YouTubers to add short videos to their arsenal, increasing total app engagement.

In fact, Shorts are YouTube's fastest-growing video genre, with over 70 billion views per day, and many creators have been able to increase channel engagement by including shorter features.

And you won't even have to come up with distinct ideas for Shorts; YouTube's algorithm will create and publish them for you, allowing you to tap into Shorts without making any more effort.
