The $1 billion Creator Fund, which TikTok set aside to reward its users for producing viral content, is being suspended.
The fund is being replaced with a new initiative that the company claims would provide creators higher compensation.
Successful creators—those who post videos on TikTok with 100,000 views or more—were given the chance to apply for the fund in 2021, which allowed them to start earning money from their content.
In 2020, TikTok said that it would begin the fund with $200 million and reach $1 billion in the United States within three years.
However, several creators voiced their dissatisfaction with the meager earnings from the fund.
TikTok is ending its Creator Fun
While discontinuing the Creator Fund, TikTok has introduced a new product.
"The Creativity Program was created based on the learnings and feedback we've gained from the previous Creator Fund," a TikTok representative stated.
"As we keep creating new ways to reward creators and improve the TikTok experience, we appreciate the feedback and direct insights from our community to assist with informing our decisions."
According to the spokesperson, creators in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France will no longer be able to use the original Creator Fund as of December 16, 2023.
The Creator Fund allows all enrolled creators to transfer to the new program.
