OpenAI Shuts Down Its AI Tool After Artists Leak Video Tool in Protest
OpenAI provided 300 visual artists and filmmakers with early access to Sora, a new generative AI video tool, in order to "gain feedback" on the technology. The IT business received it, but not the type it had hoped for.
On Tuesday, a group of Sora testers made a version of the tool public, along with a statement condemning OpenAI's initiative as exploitative and "more about PR and advertisement."
According to the artists' statement, which was uploaded on the AI development website Hugging Face, OpenAI blocked access to Sora three hours after the group made it publicly available online.

"We were granted access to Sora with the promise of becoming early testers, red teamers, and creative collaborators.
However, we feel we are being duped into 'art washing' to convince the public that Sora is a valuable tool for artists," stated the open letter, addressed to "Dear Corporate AI Overlords."
Following the protest, OpenAI announced that it has suspended access to Sora.
In response to Variety, OpenAI representative Niko Felix stated, "Sora is still in research preview, and we're aiming to blend creativity with solid safety measures for wider use.
